Good job Mr. Hamilton! Also, I've found that the positives of simply planning for students to use their phones as part of a lesson greatly outweigh the negatives. Students today will choose to use their phones (even if laptops or tablets are available) for any assignment you plan and allow them to use them for.

SO proud of those writing test scores! Way to go folks who make 'em write! I try to do so as much as I can in science classes. Having taught a lot of them last year, I can attest that this group of juniors is by and large both bright & dedicated. Also, I agree with Joel about just planning on having them use those phones as much as possible; the only time I have students choose an alternative means of research, etc. is if the iPad cart is available.

So only two students in the entire senior class at Murray High haven't passed the Graduation test? That is very impressive.

Yes, we are the Beta version for student use of cellphones. We all need to address the habitual violator of whichever device, (cellphone, IPod, gaming), that is being abused. I have a student whose grade is definitely tied to his communication device. I told Mrs. Cain that I think there is a quote somewhere that reads, “Some students cannot be left to their own devices”.

The big jump in student absences is concerning, I hope this isn't a developing trend.

My 10th graders have had terribly high absenteeism this year. Last week, one day I had 17 absences. Isn't this the group last year that had the best attendance in the school?

Thank you for the Page 1 message … it made me pause and think about our Teachers. Although I would still consider myself “new”, I have the belief that teaching, like just about every profession, is a people-business. It’s about building trust and building relationships, for without these nothing much else can really happen effectively; it’s hard to quantify those things, but they’re what make good Teachers, good Police Officers, good salespeople, good leaders, etc. I think our Teachers, new and veteran, get that, and I see examples of it every day. I believe our students know how much we care (they are pretty adept at reading people/motives), so by and large they are more receptive to what we are trying to teach. Like the old quote says, “People have to know how much you care before they care how much you know.” Proud to work with a bunch of folks that care and put in the extra work to do their jobs the right way.

My junior ENGL 1101 class is wicked smart, talented, and motivated. They have "skipped" two years of high school English to enter into a rigorous and dense course, and they are proving every day that we have the best students in Georgia! It is a delight to work with them every day. They deserve lots of brags! :)

Thank you for the reminder about the teacher's lounge and workrooms. One thing that should be mentioned is that students who enter the teacher's lounge on the language arts hall are not above snooping through the refrigerator and taking whatever isn't glued to the shelves.

Writing scores were awesome! Great to see them! The juniors this year were the best group of sophomores last year I had had in a long time! Ms. Parrish, Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Queen, and Mrs. Wilkie as well as the inclusion teachers deserve a great deal of credit for getting these students over this particular testing "bar".
