A great way to incorporate student choice and higher-order thinking skills is to use a student contract where the student has an assignment based on choice. In this case, the student must demonstrate mastery of the standard (Assignment #5) through a choice of activities, one being student-created. This allows the students to have some degree of control over their method of learning and encourages autonomy. Also, a perfect way to differentiate! Thank you for sharing, Mr. Hensley. I know that all of you have activities and lessons that others would love to see - please send them to me so I can share the great things going on in the classrooms at MCHS!

I like that the students receive this at the beginning of the unit and have the opportunity to move at their own pace. A great way to encourage self-directed learning! Keep up the good work Mr. Hensley!

I had several students in my class tell me how much they love this style of learning in Mr. Hensley's classroom. They told me they were actually picking up on the material better this way than the traditional direct instruction. Awesome job, Josh!

I am in 2nd Period with Coach Hensley and the students seem to be enjoying this method of instruction.

Teachers can google choice boards to at a little different view of student contracts. I use choice boards to help differentiate activities in my class.
