I would much rather them keep spring break where it is.... this way the time after spring break and the end of the year is less. Plus there is only 4 weeks between winter and spring break.

No way on the earlier start! Hands off my August. Although I remember this thing we used to have called fall break. Where oh where has it gone?

I liked having a couple more days off in October next to Columbus day and less off during Thanksgiving week. Just saying!

Absolutely! I think the post-Labor Day start is an advantage to the kids and parents as much as us.

If we get furlough day(s) back, any ideas where those might go?

They would be added to Preplanning.

Mrs. Linder said that any changes we might suggest for the school calendar would be referred to the central office. I would prefer to have spring break in its usual place and just have a long Easter weekend. That is too early for spring break and too long until Summer!!!

I agree with what you are saying Terri. I would hate to think we had to wait so long until the end of school without a break. Also, you know how the students are after Spring Break...WILD!

Good Call! The scheduled spring break falls MUCH too early. It is too close to winter break and too far from memorial day. I would think it needs to be pushed at least two weeks.

I agree that spring break is too close to winter break. We should try to leave it in its usual spot and just have a long Easter weekend.

I agree on having the later spring break and a long Easter weekend. Also the Wednesday off for veterans day is a bit odd.

As a veteran, I agree with Marco. I understand we had some complaints about not having Veteran's Day observance on the actual day, but having that observance on a Monday or a Friday just makes more sense from an academic standpoint. Having it on Wednesday sorely disrupts the flow of the student academic week.

I agree with not having Veteran's Day observed in the middle of the week. I also agree that Spring Break needs to be moved back at least 2 weeks!!!

Like Marco, I also like that full week for Thanksgiving. With my families scattered between NC, TN and GA, I need that much time just to make the Turkey day rounds:)

Spring Break is the thing. If we do get a furlough day, we could use it for Good Friday and at least move it 1 week, but that affects the students' seat time, right?

I would like to suggest having PL4 on Jan 4. Three planning days at the end is a lot, especially after you have gotten used to having less.

This is the most helpful of the suggestions I've read thus far. A planning day directly before students come back from Christmas break is a much more effective use of that time than an extra day after the year is over.

I agree. I would rather have a day after Christmas break to prepare for students than have 3 days post-planning. I think, though, that Mrs. Linder said if they made that change, then students would not be out of school until after Memorial day. I think it basically pushes the calendar back one day. I, too, would rather have a long Easter weekend and then have spring break a little later.

Remember: If we add a PL day in January, the student day HAS to be moved somewhere: before Labor Day, after Memorial Day, one day of the week long breaks, etc. Does that change your minds on the planning day in January?

I do NOT want to come earlier or stay later. I have looked for a way to make it work that would make sense, but the only thing I can come up with is to take a Monday away from Thanksgiving or Winter break so we could have a Planning day after Christmas. I would much rather do that than start earlier or end later. If we get the planning day after Christmas, it would need to be for us to do classroom stuff and not for trainings though.

I would think that Tuesday, May 31 would be the most logical choice. Just make Friday, May 28 a full day and have students come for their half day on following Tuesday. We could transfer that PL day to the day after Christmas break. We are going to be here on that day regardless so it does not produce a "longer" school year, nor does it make us have an earlier start. We truly don't need 3 planning days at the end of school and SORELY need a planning day after Christmas.

...or Brett's idea below of moving the start day of school to Friday, September 4 would work also. I would rather make students come at the end, but would be okay with starting that Friday.

Do not take a day away from Thanksgiving week and certainly do not add one to the end of the year. A lot of people take that Memorial Day week as vacation week. Do not want to start until after Labor Day again a lot of people take the week before as vacation that way the get an extra day. Just move Spring Break back to the first or second week in April and give us a long Easter Weekend. It has been working great so don't change it.

I would like to move winter break back a week or two. We are just coming off of a 2 week break at Christmas and MLK day. Then move spring break back 1 or 2 weeks and things are spread out nicely.

I'd much rather have Spring Break on April 4th-8th. I'd also like to move a preplanning or post planning day to January 4th and let the first day of school could be Friday September 4th.

I agree with Spring Break on the 4th-8th, but don't take my pre-planning days! I would rather have the day in January, but if that can't be worked out, I'd rather add the post-planning day to pre-planning like Christina suggested. I always need more time then anyway. I would be okay with full days instead of half days in Dec and May.

Another way would be to make the last day before Christmas Break a Whole day, move a post planning day to January 6 and end school with a full day on May 27th.

In order for it to be considered a day of school for students, it has to be a morning - lunch. So--changing the half days to full days would not add a "student day" to our calendar since they half day already counts as an actual day. I

I think that there would be a lot of negative push back in the community for starting on a Friday and coming back after Memorial Day. I am not opposed at all to starting in August and returning to a 180 calendar, but I am sure that puts me in a minority of one. The issue that is more important to me is moving Spring Break into April and keeping the full week at Thanksgiving.
