Don't be mislead by the Lexile graph. The percentage of students in the basic column is the same but the students below basic decreased by 5% and the number of students that are either proficient or advanced has increased by 6%. Way to go MCHS!

That February flu season put a wallop on staff attendance (YIKES!); I was part of that batch this time (non-flu), unfortunately...(I was doing so well, this year.) I can't believe the tardy count; chalk it up to snow, sicknesses, etc....I don't know.

How many of the tardies are due to "arriving to school late" as opposed to "arriving to class late"?

It would be good to know the amount of students who are tardy to 2nd through 7th, as opposed to those who arrive tardy in the morning..

I like giving articles to students to read as a text at least once a week, but I have never given them articles to compare that differ on viewpoints. I will be trying this next week!

YES! Have them compare the two viewpoints. Have them practice referring to BOTH texts in their writing. This will be a HUGE help on the EOCs!!

With this school-wide initiative to work on comparing two view points, finding textual evidence, and citing it correctly, I know we will see improvements on our ELA EOCs.

I believe they correlate, and the behavior pattern spreads throughout the building when teachers are absent.

I love to see the improvement in literacy as well as the strategies posted. They should be very beneficial for our students taking their EOCS especially the 9th and 11th Lit. EOCs.

I love the idea of students getting to read different viewpoints on topics across the curriculum and then taking a stance while referring to both sides. This will be a huge help on the English EOCs. Students also like to read about topics other than literature, and I think this is an excellent way to achieve literacy integration and rigor!

I like the idea of creating a shorter test with questions that build off each other. This allows the student a chance to not only prove their competency in a certain area, but also to practice writing extended response problems

I used the Opposing Viewpoints website for my American literature research papers and I found it to be very beneficial. I liked it better than GALILEO. The credit goes to Mr. Moat who set up the web page for my students to make it easily accessible for my students to write their argumentative essays.

The one slide with the comment about the opportunity to read is good, especially since it includes the checking for comprehension as the second part of the point being made.

I realize that Thinking Maps are not in vogue at the moment but when their use is organic and not contrived they can really increase rigor and create opportunities for class discussions. I use them several days per week as a warm up.

Reciprocal Learning has really elevated my student's comprehension of assigned readings. I want to try this in conjunction with annotations next time, especially for pulling variables out of practice problems in conceptual physics.
