As I've been looking over lesson plans this week, I thought perhaps would be a good time to re-post the lesson plan format as well as some useful information regarding some of the elements of the plan. Remember, plans are due on Mondays for that week and should be complete with at least one differentiation noted for the week. In all honesty, you are probably differentiating every day and just do not realize it! You will find the Lesson Plan format to use this year at the bottom of the page under the Useful Handouts tab. Some of you have a landscaped template that is fine to use as well. Just make sure that the differentiation part is included with the template you choose to use. All sections of the plan are to be completely filled out. Each plan should include Standards (State and WIDA), EQ's for each day, Vocabulary that will be introduced that week, and a Literacy Integration method (there are lots of ideas in the dropdown box). Activating Strategies - In the "activating strategy" portion of the document, note HOW --you are activating. What strategy are you using to prepare students for the lesson? Click the button below for some great ideas on different strategies that can be used at the beginning of your class. Body of Instruction - This section is for what you are doing, not the students. How is the lesson being taught? Formative Assessment - How are you checking for understanding? There are many short, simple ways to do this. Click below to find some new ideas to incorporate formative assessments into your lessons every day. Summarizing Activity- What can you do to briefly summarize what your students learned that day? What do you want your students to take away from the lesson? Summative Assessment - will not be every day - unit tests, benchmarks, projects, performance tasks, etc. Differentiation - should be included at least once during the week. That form is also under the Useful Handouts tab. I hope this is helpful information. And for those struggling with planning, discuss it during your dept. meetings and check with your peers. I have seen some great examples of lesson plans. I will be adding pictures of some of those soon for each subject area. You are the experts, so "steal" from each other! :-)
**Please add a comment to this post as documentation that everyone has seen the information and knows where to go to find the lesson plan forms. For those of you not teaching Math (you are probably thrilled about that), you may not be aware that the Math department is trying something new this year. All of the math students are creating Interactive Notebooks (INB's) - basically their own textbooks. I have personally seen some great ideas being shared and Brittney Adams took the time to share this...
I have had very positive feedback from my students about interactive notebooks. They seem to really enjoy doing them and also being able to use them as a resource. They are always pulling them out and looking at their notes to remember how to complete a problem (they know what page it should be on and do not lose their notes). Thank you very much (Mrs. Linder) for purchasing the supplies to make this be something we are able to do. I would love for anyone else using the INB's in their classrooms to share their experiences as well. And, if you do not teach math, be sure to ask your students about them. I'm sure they would love to see that you are interested in what they are doing! You will begin to see me in your classrooms for Awareness Walks beginning this week. During a TKES awareness walk, I will usually rate at least the following standards out of the total 10, but especially paying close attention to Standards 2, 3, and 4. (Listed below are some of the things I will look for related to each standard) Performance standard 2: Instructional Planning I will look at past & present lesson plans - every element of the plan. Do your plans follow your pacing guides? I will look at the data in your teacher portfolio - did you use data to assist you as you plan for instruction, when appropriate? Performance standard 3: Instructional Strategies I will focus on how you are delivering instruction - are students actively engaged, are you including DOK words in your instruction-apply, create, etc. Did you reference the standard(s) & E.Q.? How did you summarize the lesson? Could technology or thinking maps be integrated into the lesson? Performance standard 4: Differentiated Instruction Are differentiation strategies being used and recorded throughout the week? Remember, differentiation can be shown in several ways: Content - How are students gaining access to knowledge? Listening, Reading, Doing Offer learners a choice in complexity of content that matches their level of understanding. Process - Flexible grouping - vary from whole group to small groups to individual Product - Vary assessments - oral responses, demonstrations, interactive notebooks, formal tests; allow students to have a choice on how they express what they know. Performance standard 5 or 6: Assessment Strategies/Assessment Uses How are you assessing the students during the lesson (formative assessments) ?- Are you asking individual students questions and increasing the rigor by asking them to explain/justify their answers? During class discussions, stay away from whole group questioning the majority of the time! Are students being held accountable for their own learning? Are you providing opportunities to re-expose students to content? Research shows that consistent feedback and reinforcement have a positive effect on achievement. If rating assessment uses, I will look for evidence that you grouped students using data - might be noted on the differentiation template &/or needs-based template, &/or a list of students grouped for PALS by Lexile scores, &/or students grouped by any type of assessment data - might be listed on your lesson plan template. Performance standard 7: Positive Learning Environment When observing your classroom management, I will be looking to see if students are on task, if there are disruptions and if so are they responded to in a timely manner? Is classroom talk respectful, supportive and productive (teacher and students)? Overall, is it clear that classroom expectations & rules are established?
SLO Measure Teachers,
We will measure the growth between the pre-test mean score and the post-test mean score for students who are here for a full academic year. If you attain 30%-39% gains, your growth score would fall into the “typical growth” category. If you attain 40% or higher gains, you will fall into the “high growth” category which is the exemplary status. You must enter your SLO pre-test scores into Infinite Campus once you have calculated them. The instructions are shown below. The deadline to have pre-tested, scored, and uploaded SLOs is September 21st. Remember that the pre SLO does not count as a test grade for your students, but your post SLO does. That way, we hope that students will take that post test seriously because it impacts them. Entering SLO Scores
Day 1 accomplished! Hope everyone had a great one! Upcoming Deadline - Don't miss it!It's that time of year again...TKES Orientation and Self-Assessments are due this Friday - that's right! It won't take long and you will find the directions to watch the powerpoint and complete your self-assessment here. Once all steps have been finished, please comment and let me know you are done.
